72-Hour Emergency Kit Checklist
72-Hour Emergency Kit Checklist: What to Pack (And What’s a Waste of Money)
Every disaster preparedness site has “the list.” You know the one — 150 items, half of which you’ll never use, ending with a $400 price tag and a vague sense of guilt for not already owning a hand-crank radio.
Let’s skip that. A 72-hour kit (sometimes called a “go-bag” or “bug-out bag”) exists for one simple purpose: getting you and your household through the first three days of an emergency — a power outage, evacuation, or disruption to normal services — before help arrives or things stabilize.
Here’s what actually belongs in one, and what you can skip.
Why 72 Hours Specifically?
Emergency response agencies commonly use the 72-hour window because that’s typically how long it takes for larger relief efforts to fully mobilize after a major disruption. It’s not a magic number — it’s just a practical planning baseline.
The Actual Essentials (Not the Padded List)
Water & Food
- 3 gallons of water per person (1 gallon/day) or a portable filter if weight is a concern
- Non-perishable, no-cook food for 3 days per person — think granola bars, canned goods with pull-tabs, dried fruit, peanut butter
- A basic manual can opener (yes, people forget this constantly)
Light & Power
- A flashlight or headlamp, plus spare batteries
- A power bank for charging phones (this one’s easy to forget until you actually need it)
First Aid
- A compact first aid kit — bandages, antiseptic, gauze, any personal medications you take regularly (this is the one item people most often forget to restock)
Documents & Cash
- Copies of ID, insurance info, and emergency contacts in a waterproof bag
- Small amount of cash — card readers and ATMs don’t always work during outages
Warmth & Shelter
- An emergency mylar blanket per person
- A change of clothes appropriate for your climate
Tools
- A multitool or basic knife
- Duct tape and paracord — genuinely useful for a dozen unexpected situations
Communication
- A battery or hand-crank radio to stay updated if cell networks go down
What You Can Skip (Despite What Big Lists Say)
- Gas masks — overkill for the vast majority of household emergencies
- Fishing kits — unlikely to matter in a 3-day window
- Extreme quantities of duplicate tools — one good knife beats three mediocre ones
- Elaborate cooking setups — a 3-day kit doesn’t need a full camp stove; save that for longer-term prep
Building It Without Overspending
You don’t need to buy everything new or all at once. Start with what’s already in your house — a flashlight you own, spare phone charger, canned food from your pantry — and fill gaps gradually. A functional 72-hour kit for one person can realistically be assembled for $40-70 if you’re resourceful, versus $150+ if you buy a pre-made “premium” kit brand new.
One Kit, or One Per Person?
For adults and older kids, a personal bag each makes sense — it means everyone can grab their own and go. For younger kids, a shared family kit with their specific items (medication, comfort item, snacks they’ll actually eat) tends to work better.
Where to Keep It
Somewhere you can grab fast: a hall closet, under a bed, or in your car if evacuation is more likely than sheltering in place in your area. Don’t bury it behind holiday decorations where it’ll take ten minutes to dig out.
The Bottom Line
A 72-hour kit isn’t about preparing for the apocalypse — it’s about not being caught flat-footed during the much more common, much less dramatic disruptions that happen to everyone eventually: storms, outages, evacuations. Build it once, check it twice a year, and you’re covered without overspending or overthinking it.
